Privateer Days 2014 to Set Sail in Liverpool

Government of Canada provides financial support to the Privateer Days Commission

June 13, 2014 – Liverpool, Nova Scotia – Department of Canadian Heritage

Liverpool will set the date back to 1780 to celebrate the colourful privateer heritage and maritime history distinct to this region of Nova Scotia.

The Privateer Days Commission will receive funding of $37,900 for Privateer Days 2014 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program.

Gerald Keddy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue and for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Member of Parliament (South Shore–St. Margaret’s), made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

The Privateer Days Commission promotes the culture and history of Liverpool, which was one of British North America's leading privateer ports. The 29^th edition of the Privateer Days Festival will take place in Liverpool from June 20 to 24. Activities for the 2014 edition include a live encampment, battle re-enactments by the King's Orange Rangers, tours of the Old Burial Ground, an artisan workshop, a privateer play, and music and dance performances featuring local artists.

Privateer Days 2014 will involve 500 volunteers who will dedicate 22,000 hours to help with all stages of the festival.
The Privateer Days Commission has received funding for the Privateer Days Festival every year since 2008–2009. The group has also received funding through the Celebrate Canada Program since 1993–1994.
