June 28, 2014 – Vancouver, British Columbia – The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, made the following statement today:
“June 28th is Canadian Wine Day, and in the spirit of the occasion, I would like to highlight the BC wine industry and acknowledge its value to the British Columbia’s economy.
“The BC wine industry is a significant economic driver in the province, with an overall impact of $2 billion. A significant portion of this economic impact, over $475 million, is linked to tourism and tourism employment.
“In recognition of this tremendous economic impact, our Government has worked tirelessly to promote new opportunities for our wine industry, both within Canada and abroad. In particular, I would like to acknowledge my colleague, Dan Albas, and his efforts to increase freedom in the industry and reducing internal trade barriers. Our Government looks forward to working with all of you as we build on this success.
“On behalf of the Harper Government, I would like to reiterate our appreciation of the value of this industry and how it is contributing to jobs and growth in the province. In addition, as a sommelier and wine enthusiast, it is easy for me to take a moment to appreciate some of the amazing wines being produced in British Columbia.”
