OTTAWA, June 6, 2014 – Canada’s magazine industry produces excellent, diverse publications that play an important role in informing and entertaining readers everywhere. This evening, the National Magazine Awards once again provided an opportunity to recognize those who are fundamental to our growing magazine industry—writers, illustrators, editors, photographers and art directors.
Magazines and community newspapers generate revenues of about $3 billion annually and employ tens of thousands of Canadians in every region. Our Government is proud to support Canadian magazines through the Canada Periodical Fund, a $74.8 million program for magazines and non-daily newspapers.
I would like to commend the National Magazine Awards Foundation for its outstanding work to recognize exceptional magazines and content in either of our official languages.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate all of this year’s winners and finalists on their success in offering relevant and compelling information to Canadians in high-quality magazines.
