Ottawa, Ontario -1 June 2014
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark Canadian Armed Forces Day:
“Today, as we celebrate Canadian Armed Forces Day, let us pause and pay tribute to the brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces – both past and present – for their tremendous sacrifices and service to our great country.
“Every day, the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces courageously put their lives on the line to serve our country and to defend its sovereignty. They help to preserve the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, in operations both here at home and abroad. In the past year alone, they have patrolled and secured our frontiers, protected the lives of Canadians by responding to floods and other national emergencies and conducted daily search and rescue operations. They have also contributed to maritime security and counter-terrorism operations in the Arabian Sea, helped deter terrorist activities and counter illicit drug trafficking activities in the CaribbeanBasin, deployed to the Philippines in support of emergency relief efforts after Typhoon Haiyan, contributed to regional security in Eastern Europe alongside NATO, and supported NATO allies with strategic airlift. Their commitment and heroic efforts during these tough assignments represent the very best of what it means to be Canadian.
“On this day, let us also offer our heartfelt gratitude to the countless sailors, soldiers, air men and air women who sadly made the ultimate sacrifice serving our great country. Their loyal service will always make us proud.
“Canadian Armed Forces Day is also a time to honour the families of the members of our Armed Forces for the support they provide to their loved ones during tough assignments.
“This year’s celebration is especially significant given that 2014 marks the end of Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan, - which was recognized by a National Day of Honour on May 9, 2014 - the Centennial of the start of the First World War, the 75th anniversary of the start of the Second World War and the 70th anniversary of D-Day, all important milestones in our country’s history. Canada’s contributions to these conflicts generated immense international respect for our country and helped define and shape Canada as it is known today.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I call on Canadians to join me in extending our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to all members of the Canadian Armed Forces and their families who put the interests of our great country ahead of their own.”
