June, 19, 2014 - Ottawa, ON - Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada
Today, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, the Honourable Bernard Valcourt welcomed Royal Assent of legislation that clearly demonstrates the Harper Government’s commitment to working in partnership with First Nations to create the tools for a prosperous future.
Bill C-34, Tla’amin Final Agreement Act, will give the Tla’amin Nation more control over lands and resources, as well as self-government over their lands, resources and members. It will also give certainty regarding the Tla’amin Nation’s Aboriginal rights and title claims, bringing stability and economic benefits to the First Nation.
Tla’amin Nation’s Final Agreement is the fourth final agreement to be reached under the British Columbia treaty process and, now, the 26th nationally.
