Project will benefit pedestrians, cyclists and commuters thanks to government support
June 28, 2014 – West Kelowna, British Columbia – Infrastructure Canada
After undergoing a makeover for most of the past year, a busy section of Brown Road, between Main Street and Bering Road, was officially opened today on time for the District of West Kelowna's annual Westside Daze Parade. The first phase of the Brown Road Streetscape Improvement Project is an integral part of the ongoing revitalization of Westbank Centre, the District's urban and commercial core.
The project involved a wide range of infrastructure improvements, including a new road surface and new sidewalks, the addition of designated parking stalls, improved street signage and pedestrian crossings, and new curb and gutter installations. In addition, overhead utilities were moved underground and the streetscape is now adorned with ornamental lampposts and street furniture.
Funding for this $3.16 million project was provided by a variety of sources, including $586,034 through the federal Gas Tax Fund, $75,000 from BC Hydro's Beautification Program and $20,000 from ICBC's Road Improvement Program. The District of West Kelowna provided the remaining funding.
