Project possible thanks to federal Gas Tax Fund
July 31, 2014 – Toronto
Toronto commuters will soon benefit from a new fleet of Toronto Transit Commission streetcars thanks to joint investments from the federal, provincial and municipal governments. Officials gathered today to announce the start of service of the first of 204 brand new streetcars scheduled for August 31st, which will eventually replace all vehicles in the current fleet. These vehicles are the first new generation of streetcars in Toronto in 30 years.
The new low-floor vehicles are fully accessible, larger, and air conditioned. They boast numerous safety and performance improvements, and can comfortably accommodate 68 more passengers than their predecessors. Thanks to the new fleet, passengers will enjoy a quieter, more comfortable ride.
An average of 250,000 riders use the streetcar system each weekday on 11 routes comprising more than 300 kilometres of track. With its increased carrying capacity, the new streetcar fleet will provide the City of Toronto with annual operational savings on high-volume ridership routes for years to come.
