Vimy, France – On July 12, a Canadian contingent of approximately 200 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and civilian VIPs participating in the 98th annual International Four Days MarchesNijmegen will honour the fallen by visiting and holding memorial ceremonies in France and Belgium. The Nijmegen contingent will hold remembrance services at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial; the Langemark German First World War Cemetery; the Essex Farm Commonwealth War Cemetery, near where Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae penned the poem In Flanders Field; and attend a special memorial service at the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing with the last post service.
The ceremonies are as follows:
Attending the event will be the following VIPs: Wladyslaw Lizon, Member of Parliament for Mississauga East—Cooksville; Brigadier-General Alain Pelletier, Joint Task Force Nijmegen Contingent Commander; Janice Burke, Veterans Affairs Canada Senior Director of Strategic Policy Integration; Scott Clark, Honourary Colonel of 22 Wing/CFB North Bay, and President of Clark Marketing Communications; and Comrades Daniel Demers and Andre Wesseling of the Royal Canadian Legion. Other VIPs will include Constable Sheila Vanstone and Greig Vandenberge from the Vancouver Police Department; and Comrade Gerard Hendricks from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 5 in the Netherlands. Lieutenant-Commander Mathias Himpler, from the Federal Republic of Germany, will be attending the service at the Langemark German War Cemetery.
