The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has extended for twelve months the power reactor operating licence for Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) Darlington Nuclear Generating Station (NGS) located in the municipality of Clarington, on the north shore of Lake Ontario.
As a result, the public hearing to consider the long term renewal of Darlington's operating licence, including the proposed refurbishment of all four Darlington NGS units, will take place in the summer and fall of 2015.
OPG had requested an extension to allow additional time to provide more comprehensive documentation, reflect new CNSC expectations and facilitate public engagement in the upcoming public hearing.
The Record of Proceedings, including Reasons for Decision from the hearing on the extension that was held July 23, 2014, has been published on the CNSC website.
The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect the health, safety and security of Canadians and the environment; to implement Canada's international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.
