Long Harbour Development Corporation receives more than $1.6 million to construct hydromet industrial supply park

The Long Harbour Development Corporation (LHDC) is constructing a hydromet industrial supply park (HISP) thanks in part to investments by the federal and provincial governments. The announcement was made today by Senator Norman Doyle, on behalf of the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), and the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development.
The LHDC will use this funding to construct a hydromet industrial supply park adjacent to Vale's Hydromet facility in Long Harbour - Mount Arlington Heights. The project will involve the development of 7.5 hectares of land into nine commercial semi-serviced sites ranging in size from 1 acre to 3.75 acres. These sites will attract commercial tenants supplying goods and services to Vale's processing facility.
Senator Doyle also announced additional federal funding, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, for the LHDC to work with the municipalities of Placentia, Marystown, Sunnyside, Arnolds Cove and Come-By-Chance on small town readiness and their ability to host multi-national corporations. The focus of this initiative will be on five key areas of corporate social responsibility: community employment, municipal tax agreements, local procurement, environmental impacts, and communications. This group of municipalities will also participate in a Best Practice Mission to a small town or region in Canada that has dealt successfully with similar issues and challenges facing the participating towns.
The LHDC was established in 1991 to assist with the economic development of the Long Harbour and Mount Arlington Heights area. It is designed to inform and help persuade prospective businesses to consider the Long Harbour Industrial Site as an ideal location to establish or expand their business. The HISP will provide opportunities to diversify the economy of the region.
