As part of a $106 million investment in small craft harbours across the country, the Government of Canada will provide $9.5 million to repair and maintain fishing harbours in Prince Edward Island. The $106 million in funding includes $66 million in regular program funding for the Small Craft Harbours Program in 2014-15 and $40 million over two years from Economic Action Plan 2014.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Small Craft Harbours Program is a nationwide program mandated to keep harbours that are critical to the fishing industry open and in good repair.
Major projects in Prince Edward Island being funded under the program include:
- Annual channel redredging at Malpeque Cove, Naufrage, North Lake and Skinners Pond. A coastal study will also be undertaken at Skinners Pond.
In addition, a number of minor repair and redredging projects as well as technical studies will be carried out at small craft harbours throughout the province this year.
