The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, met with stakeholders to discuss our Government's progress to strengthen the safety of our communities. Over the past year, our Government has taken strong action to keep our streets and communities safe and secure, making communities better places to live, work and raise families.
Quick Facts
- The Combatting Terrorism Act was passed last year, making it a criminal offence to leave Canada for the purposes of participating in or facilitating terrorist activity.
- Our Government introduced legislation to:
- create a Canadian Victims Bill of Rights to entrench in law, for the first time, a Victim's right to information, protection, participation and restitution;
- make it a criminal offence to distribute intimate images without the permission of the person in the images as part of Bill C-13, the Protecting Canadians from Online Crime Act;
- make amendments to better protect children from a range of sexual offences and exploitation at home and abroad;
- make the correctional system safer for staff and the Canadian public with the Drug-Free Prisons Act;
- provide additional support to Victims with the Act to Amend the Corrections and Conditional Release Act (Fairness for Victims); and
- keep contraband tobacco off Canadian markets and out of the hands of children with the Tackling Contraband Tobacco Act.
- Our Government launched an anti-cyberbullying national public awareness campaign, Stop Hating Online, to raise awareness among Canadians of the impact of cyberbullying and when this behaviour amounts to criminal activity. Our Government has also launched Canada.ca/StopHatingOnline, a comprehensive resource for parents and youth with the information, advice and tools they need to identify, prevent and stop cyberbullying.
