Ottawa, July 18, 2014 — The Honourable Tim Uppal, Minister of State (Multiculturalism) issued the following statement condemning an unprovoked attack in Hamilton, Ontario:
“I am troubled by reports this week that two McMaster University students were victims of an unprovoked attack following Ramadan evening prayers in downtown Hamilton.
“I understand that Hamilton police are investigating this unacceptable incident as a possible hate crime. I strongly encourage anyone with information to contact local authorities at 905-546-5678.
“Canada is built upon values of freedom, including freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and the rule of law. Our country is internationally recognized for its peaceful pluralism, which is a great source of our strength.
“Canadians of all backgrounds must always feel safe in our communities.”
