Upgrades to Park help strengthen and diversify local economy

The Municipality of the District of Yarmouth and members of the community celebrated the grand opening of the upgraded Leif Ericson Park today, just in time for the peak of tourism season.
In 2013, the Government of Canada, through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF), made an investment of $125,000 to support upgrades to the existing walkways, create six concrete look-offs, improve access through the gorge, expand picnic areas, and install interpretive signage and benches.
Located within an area recognized in 2012 as one of Canada’s Best Public Spaces by the Canada Institute of Planners, Leif Ericson Park offers a wealth of history and beauty for visitors from near and far. This project has increased the accessibility and functionality of the Park for visitors and residents alike, generating economic benefits for local shops, accommodations and restaurants.
Quick Facts:
- The Cape has been welcoming visitors since 1604, when Samuel de Champlain landed and named the area “Cap Forchu,” meaning forked tongue of land.
- The rocks of Yarmouth County that overlook the Park represent four geological periods in Earth's history including the Cambrian period, the Ordovician period, the Silurian period and the Devonian period.
- The Cape Forchu Lightstation, including Leif Ericson Park, was named Canada’s Best Public Space in 2012 by the Canada Institute of Planners.
