Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland undertakes new initiatives to support key growth industries

The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MI) will significantly improve its capacity to provide emergency response training to the province’s natural resource sectors through two new initiatives.
Support for the initiatives was announced today by the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), through an investment of more than $463,000. The funding will enable MI to continue to provide industry required training to companies and employees operating in Newfoundland and Labrador’s marine and land-based resource sectors, such as oil and gas, energy and mining.
A new Mobile Live Fire Training Unit, based at MI’s Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre in Stephenville, will provide training to workers in industrial sectors such as mining and oil and gas for situations that reflect real life emergency scenarios. In addition, the Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC) will design a new command and control helideck simulator to enhance MI’s ability to provide critical emergency preparedness training to industry that is not currently offered in the province.

- The SERT Centre is an accredited ISO 9001 training centre offering specialized safety and emergency response training in areas such as aviation, industrial safety, emergency response and firefighting. It has a modern, nationally certified training facility capable of providing customized training.
- The OSSC delivers a range of safety, survival and emergency response training to the offshore petroleum, marine transportation, fishing and land-based industries. The Centre works closely with industry, researchers and industry associations to improve safety technologies and practices.
- The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland fosters economic development in strategic sectors of the province’s economy, particularly the fisheries and offshore, to enable Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to participate in the marine industry nationally and internationally.
- Funding for this initiative is provided through ACOA’s Business Development Program.
