Minister Rob Moore visits the Holyrood Marine Base and sees first-hand the benefits of Government of Canada investments
July 10, 2014 – Holyrood, NL – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), today visited the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Holyrood Marine Base, which is developing into a world leader in oceans-related research, thanks in part to past Government of Canada investments totaling close to $1.4 million.
Minister Moore was joined by Marine Institute representatives on a tour of the facility’s workshops, research labs and wharf facilities, and was given the opportunity to view innovative equipment and technologies. In addition to learning about the training and research activities taking place at the facility, Minister Moore was also informed of plans for future projects to continue to build the Marine Institute’s capacity in marine research and training.
The Holyrood Marine Base supports the Marine Institute’s at-sea research and training priorities and those of the broader Memorial University of Newfoundland community, which are primarily related to ocean science, ocean technology, ocean observation and the marine ecosystem. The marine base is also a platform for industry to test and demonstrate their innovative products and complete ocean-related research. As well, the base is providing opportunities for local, national and international researchers, entrepreneurs and companies to avail of its unique expertise and facilities.
Quick Facts:
- In 2008, the Marine Institute received $1,301,600, through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF), to establish the Holyrood Marine Base, which opened in 2010. The project involved converting a former fish processing property into the marine base, upgrading a wharf and storage facility and acquiring specialized equipment.
- In 2011, the Government of Canada invested $90,887, through ACOA’s ICF, to assist the Marine Institute with planning, design and concept development work to further develop the Holyrood Marine Base.
- The tour of the Holyrood Marine Base was one of several events in Newfoundland and Labrador that Minister Moore participated in as part of a summer tour of Atlantic Canada.
