July 2, 2014 – Victoria, British Columbia – Infrastructure Canada
The Capital Regional District (CRD) has directed $473,650 from the federal Gas Tax Fund to projects that will increase safety and improve access for pedestrians and cyclists across the region.
Seven municipalities and the Salt Spring Island electoral area will carry out improvements to their local active transportation networks as part of the implementation of the CRD's Pedestrian and Cycling Master Plan (PCMP), including:
- Colwood: addition of a buffered cycle lane on Kelly Road, with separate infrastructure at bus stops for bus loading, bicycles, and pedestrians ($75,000);
- Oak Bay: extension of the Foul Bay Road bicycle lane and installation of bicycle-activated traffic lights ($75,000);
- Saanich: addition of a buffered bicycle lane and multi-use pathway on Lansdowne Road ($75,000);
- Salt Spring Island: construction of multi-use pathways near Ganges Village ($75,000);
- Sooke: construction of a bicycle park, air/repair station and multi-use connector trail ($75,000);
- Central Saanich: installation of universally-accessible pedestrian crossing signals that accommodate those with disabilities ($50,014);
- Langford: construction of covered bicycle parking area ($28,000); and
- Victoria: installation of a bicycle barometer to tally bicycle riders on the Galloping Goose trail ($21,000).
These projects will improve the safety and enjoyment of cyclists and pedestrians alike in one of BC's most beautiful areas while also facilitating access to activities that promote a healthy lifestyle.
"Our Government is pleased to be contributing to the CRD's Pedestrian and Cycling Master plan, which will help create new bike route and walkways, promote their use, and see more residents of the CRD walking and riding their bikes throughout the region. The federal Gas Tax Fund, part of the historic New Building Canada Plan, is just one of the ways we are carrying out our commitment to build better communities while creating jobs and stimulating economic growth across the country."
- The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for British-Columbia
"Gas Tax-funded infrastructure brings multi-faceted benefits to communities throughout British Columbia. These projects in the Capital Regional District will create safer, more accessible pathways for cyclists and pedestrians, while increasing opportunities for exercise and improved health. They will help local communities continue to shine as great places to live, work, play and visit."
