Project possible thanks to federal Gas Tax Fund
August 31, 2014 – Toronto, Ontario – Infrastructure Canada
The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Finance today celebrated alongside Toronto residents as the first streetcar of the Toronto Transit Commission's (TTC) new fleet hit the road. The community gathered at the Spadina Station to witness the inaugural rider step aboard.
The streetcar will drive the 510 Spadina line route, marking the first new generation of streetcar in Toronto in 30 years. The new low-floor vehicle is fully accessible, larger, and air conditioned, providing passengers with a quieter, more comfortable ride.
Thanks to federal, provincial and municipal investments 203 more of these state-of the-art streetcars will go into service between now and 2019, replacing the existing fleet vehicles. They boast numerous safety and performance improvements, and can comfortably accommodate 68 more passengers than their predecessors.
TTC's streetcar system carries an average of 250,000 riders each weekday on 11 routes comprising more than 300 kilometres of track. With its increased carrying capacity, the new streetcar fleet will provide the City of Toronto with annual operational savings on high-volume ridership routes for years to come.
