The Government of Canada is committed to investing in innovative clean technologies that create high-quality jobs, generate new economic opportunities and protect the environment.
Through the ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative (ecoEII), our government is investing $600,800 to support the Powering Plug-In Electric Vehicles with Renewable Energy Supply in British Columbia (B.C.) project.
Plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) are beginning to enter the Canadian automobile market in significant numbers, particularly in British Columbia. Understanding how these vehicles will be interfaced with the electricity grid is critical to addressing the challenges and opportunities in relation to their energy use and environmental.
The project will help generate a better understanding of intermittent renewable electricity sources such as solar and wind and the storage potential in electric vehicle batteries.
In addition, the project will also help determine the optimal time to plug in electric vehicles to ensure maximum use of renewable energy, and enhance B.C.’s already clean electricity supply by allowing for greater use of renewables to generate electricity.
This project will help to lower greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and other air emissions. For each conventional light-duty vehicle replaced with a PEV in B.C., approximately four tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year will be displaced.
