August 26, 2014 – Ottawa, Ontario
Canadian soldiers, security personnel and first responders will soon have access to superior personal protective gear and armoured vehicles, made right here in Canada. The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) are teaming up for a program with industry partners to develop next-generation products for the international security and defence market.
The new Security Materials Technology research program aims to reduce the weight of armour materials by at least 25 percent, without compromising on protection. This revolutionary enhancement will improve the protection and mobility for soldiers, security personnel and first responders, which will save Canadian lives, improve operational effectiveness and strengthen Canada’s high-tech security industry. The program will also accelerate the commercialization of advanced materials technology across the aerospace, automotive and energy sectors.
