August 5, 2014 – Ottawa – Department of National Defence / Royal Canadian Navy
The Royal Canadian Navy frigate, Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Toronto arrived August 3 in its designated area of operations in the Mediterranean Sea to replace HMCS Regina, which had been supporting NATO-led maritime reassurance activities in the region as part of Standing NATO Maritime Forces.
HMCS Toronto’s participation in regional maritime security operations demonstrates Canada’s on-going commitment to our NATO allies and international security and cooperation, and ensures that Canada’s Navy remains responsive and effective in today’s changing security environment.
“Canada stands shoulder to shoulder with our NATO Allies in response to the evolving situation in Central and Eastern Europe. Russia's aggressive militarism and expansionism are a threat to Ukraine, Europe, the rule of law, and to the values that bind Western nations. Canada will not stand idly by in the face of this threat. Our government remains committed to working with our allies and partners in the international community to preserve and promote a free, democratic, and peaceful world.”
