Canada is contributing $5 million over five years to this project, which the Université Laval has been implementing since 2013 in close partnership with key Haitian institutions, including the State University of Haiti, Fondation CHIBAS - Haiti, and ministries of agriculture and public health.
This project will help increase access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food, and improve the health of people in the region of Saint-Marc, in Haiti’s Artibonite region, by intensifying and diversifying agricultural production while promoting public health.
It encourages food producers to adopt new agricultural practices that are better adapted to ecological principles and nutritional needs. Specifically, the project aims to strengthen the teaching and applied research capacities of the State University of Haiti, building a sustainable partnership among the university, public health agencies, and the local community. The initiative is designed to improve the nutritional habits of 8,000 people in Haiti, and help 16,000 people gain a better understanding of the link between nutrition and health.
Haiti is a priority for Canada in the Americas. In 2014, Haiti was confirmed as a country of focus for the Government of Canada’s international development efforts worldwide.
Canada currently supports initiatives that focus on:
- helping the Government of Haiti improve access to quality basic education and health care;
- supporting the efforts of Haitians to improve their lives and incomes by providing microcredit and financial services through savings and credit cooperatives;
- supporting job creation, in part by hiring local workers to staff labour-intensive projects such as rebuilding or repairing schools and increasing agricultural production; and
- helping to improve governance by making public institutions more effective, responsible and transparent.
