August 20, 2014 Summerside, Prince Edward Island Public Safety Canada
Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, met with stakeholders to discuss our Government’s actions to ensure the safety of our communities, while standing up for the rights of law-abiding firearms owners.
Quick Facts
- On August 15, 2014, the Government of Canada announced the coming-into-force of the Firearms Records Regulations (Classification). These regulations will require the Registrar of Firearms to keep a record of every classification determination made by them, and prohibit the amendment of those records following one year after the day on which the record is made.
- On July 23, 2014, our Government announced the coming-into-force of an expanded Order Declaring an Amnesty Period (2014), so that persons in possession of a CZ 858 or one of the Swiss Arms family of rifles are protected from criminal prosecution, and can fully enjoy the use of their property, including at the firing range.
- The amnesty will expire on March 14, 2016.
- Additionally, the Government of Canada announced its intention to table the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act, which would streamline licensing and eliminate red tape for law-abiding firearms owners.
