Canada continues to work with Peru to enhance training and skills development in the extractives sector
August 14, 2014 - Lima, Peru - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, today witnessed the signing of two agreements between Canadian research universities and the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines that will strengthen skills development and build capacity in the extractives sector in Peru.
CALDO, a consortium of nine Canadian universities dedicated to international education, will provide training for an unlimited number of professionals from Peru at one or more of the consortium members, which are University of Alberta, University of Calgary, Dalhousie University, Université Laval, Queen’s University, University of Ottawa, University of Saskatchewan, University of Waterloo and Western University.
To facilitate the training, CALDO entered into agreements with the Board of Directors of CARELEC [resource training in the electricity sector] and CAREC [committee for resource training administration in the oil and gas sector], two capacity-building units within the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines that are responsible for the development of training resources related to the electricity and hydrocarbons fields.
Helping Peru develop its education system and facilitate skills training is an important part of the Canada-Peru relationship, and this was reinforced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Peru’s President Ollanta Humala during reciprocal bilateral visits in 2013 and 2014.
Peru is a priority market under Canada’s Global Markets Action Plan and a member of the Pacific Alliance, to which Canada is an observer.
Minister Fast is in Peru as part of a six-day, 19-organization trade mission to Colombia and Peru from August 10 to 15.
