Archived - Minister Oliver Addresses Manitoba Chambers of Commerce
August 15, 2014 – Winnipeg, Manitoba – Department of Finance
Speaking to the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, Finance Minister Joe Oliver outlined Canada’s low-tax plan for jobs and growth. Calling Canada an economic success story, Minister Oliver highlighted the Government’s targeted support for Manitoba, including major investments in infrastructure across the province. Minister Oliver emphasized the importance of innovation in strengthening Canada’s competitiveness and ensuring its future prosperity. The Minister noted that Canada is on track for a balanced budget in 2015.
- Canada has created more than 1 million net new jobs since the height of the recession—one of the strongest job creation records in the Group of Seven (G-7).
- The federal tax burden is at its lowest level in more than 50 years.
- In 2013, Canada leapt from sixth to second place in Bloomberg’s ranking of the most attractive destinations for business. Canada’s total business tax costs are now the lowest in the G-7 and 46% lower than those in the United States.
- A recent New York Times study found that “after-tax middle-class incomes in Canada—substantially behind in 2000—now appear to be higher than in the United States.”
- The New Building Canada Plan will see the Government invest almost $1.2 billion in Manitoba, including more than $467 million under the New Building Canada Fund and an estimated $713 million in dedicated municipal infrastructure funding under the federal Gas Tax Fund.
- The Canada Accelerator and Incubator Program will provide $100 million in support over the next five years to enable leading business accelerators and incubators to expand their mentorship and other business development services to innovative, early-stage firms. On June 20, 2014, the Prime Minister announced that Manitoba Technology Accelerator (Biomedical Commercialization Canada Inc.) was one of the organizations chosen to advance in the selection process for this initiative.
