The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, today congratulated the Aboriginal Firefighters’ Association of Canada (AFAC) on the 25th anniversary of the Aboriginal Firefighters’ Competition and for its ongoing work in promoting fire prevention across Canada through its #BeFireSafe education campaign. The Government of Canada is once again a proud contributor to this important event.
The skills and abilities of Aboriginal Firefighters from First Nations across Canada are being showcased this weekend in Fort McKay First Nation, Alberta. Aboriginal firefighters’ from across Canada will compete in the spirit of comradery and strengthening community fire safety.
The competition provides a venue to showcase new firefighting techniques, exchange best practices between communities, and increase awareness about fire prevention. Teams compete in a series of challenges such as bucket target relays and hose transitions. Participants also attend training seminars throughout the duration of the competition to hone their skills.
