August 15, 2014 – St. Catharines, Ontario – Infrastructure Canada
St. Catharines' residents are eagerly anticipating the grand opening of their new state-of-the-art performing arts centre. Officials of all levels of government gathered today to witness progress at the centre's construction site.
The downtown performing arts centre, a 95,000-square foot academic and cultural complex, will showcase artistic and cultural activities in St. Catharines. It will include four separate performance spaces: a 775-seat concert hall, a 300-seat recital hall, a 187-seat film theatre and a 210-seat theatre/dance venue. Although they are all part of a single building with a large main floor and shared lobby, each theatre will have a distinctive architectural design.
"Performing arts are an important part of Canada's heritage. To be here today to witness progress made thus far on the new performing arts centre confirms our Government's continued commitment to improve infrastructure, and create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity. We are proud to invest in significant infrastructure projects like this one, which will showcase both the inspirations and the aspirations of St. Catharines' residents."
- Rick Dykstra, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and Member of Parliament for St. Catharines, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec
"Ontario is proud to promote arts and culture in communities across the province. The new St. Catharines Performing Arts Centre will be a modern and accessible venue that will host talented artists, performers and musicians from within our borders and beyond. Serving as a significant cornerstone in the community, the centre is creating jobs, driving tourism and building Ontario's reputation as a true cultural destination."
