Ottawa, Ontario - 15 August 2014
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark National Acadian Day:
“National Acadian Day is an occasion to celebrate Acadians’ history, language and heritage, and the invaluable contributions they have made to Canada.
“In the early 1600s, Acadians established the first permanent French settlement in North America and played a key role in helping to build New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and parts of Quebec.
“This special day was introduced in 1881 during the first National Convention of the Acadians in Memramcook, New Brunswick.
“Today, the many achievements of the Acadian community hold an important place in the development of our country’s national prosperity, and its spirit and determination remain a source of pride and inspiration.
“This annual celebration is especially notable as it is being held during the Fifth World Acadian Congress, which takes place every five years and is jointly held this year from August 8 to 24 in New Brunswick, Quebec, and northern Maine in the United States. Our Government is proud to support this edition, which provides an opportunity for the global Acadian diaspora to celebrate their remarkable culture and traditions.
“Once again, Laureen and I wish Acadians a very happy and memorable National Acadian Day and encourage all Canadians to join in celebrations commemorating the vibrancy and strength of their people.”
