Newport, Wales
5 September 2014
On September 5, 2014, leaders participating in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit in Wales, United Kingdom, had the opportunity to witness a fly-by of fighter aircraft from Allied nations, including a Canadian CF-18.
Canada’s participation in the NATO fly-by demonstrates not only its military capabilities but also our country’s enduring commitment to the Alliance, which brings together leaders from the 28 member countries as well as a number of non-NATO partner countries and international organizations.
Canada’s CF-18 joined fighter aircraft from a number of NATO member nations in the fly-by, all of which are currently or have previously participated in the Alliance’s Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, and the United States.
CF-18’s are currently stationed in Lithuania as part of the BAP mission taking place from September to December 2014. These Canadian fighter aircraft were previously stationed in Câmpia Turzii, Romania, to conduct training with NATO allies as part of Operation Reassurance, the Canadian Armed Forces’ contribution to NATO reassurance measures in response to the Russia-Ukraine crisis. Canada is also providing reassurance to NATO Allies by contributing a ship and troops to promote security and stability in Eastern and Central Europe.
