Bypass to minimize traffic impacts during construction of the new bridge for the St. Lawrence corridor project
September 29, 2014 – Verdun, Quebec – Infrastructure Canada
Minister Lebel today marked the early completion of the Île des Soeurs temporary causeway-bridge, an important milestone in the new bridge for the St. Lawrence corridor project.
Over the next few weeks, traffic will be diverted from the existing Île des Soeurs Bridge to this new bypass bridge. This measure will improve safety and minimize traffic disruptions until a new Île des Soeurs Bridge is built. An extra lane dedicated to public transit and a widened multi-use path will improve traffic flow in the corridor and enhance the safety of cyclists and pedestrians during upcoming construction.
The Government of Canada is committed to having the new bridge for the St. Lawrence in service by 2018 and to having the remainder of the corridor project, including the reconstruction of Autoroute 15 and the new Île des Soeurs Bridge, completed by 2020.
"This is an important milestone worthy of celebration. Completed months ahead of schedule and on budget, the causeway-bridge will ensure that people from the Montreal region can continue to travel through the region with minimal disruptions during the construction of the new bridge for the St. Lawrence. Looking forward, the new bridge for the St. Lawrence corridor project will be a valuable addition to the greater Montréal region."
