Today, the Honourable Chris Alexander, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, on behalf of the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, announced funding to support humanitarian operations in Afghanistan.
“Our government is working with our international partners to provide much-needed support to vulnerable women and children inAfghanistan,” said Minister Alexander. “With the support announced today,Canadais contributing toward improving maternal, newborn and child health, by addressing acute malnutrition, lack of safe drinking water and shelter, and protection for Afghan families who have been affected by the crisis inAfghanistan.”
The Afghan people continue to suffer the devastating effects of ongoing conflict, instability and natural disasters. This has created significant humanitarian needs inAfghanistanthat require ongoing support.
“Development efforts have been an essential component of Canada’s engagement in Afghanistan,” said Minister Paradis. “Building upon our long-standing and active development presence, Canada will remain committed to ensuring humanitarian needs are met in order to reduce the vulnerability of the Afghan people, particularly young children and their mothers.”
Earlier this year, Afghanistanwas reconfirmed as a country of focus for Canada’s international development efforts. Afghanistan is also one of Canada’s 10 countries of focus to improve maternal, newborn and child health.
