Ottawa, September 25, 2014 – The Canada Council for the Arts has awarded the 2014 York Wilson Prize to the MacLaren Art Centre in Barrie, Ontario. The $24,000 award will enable the Gallery to acquire a new work, entitled Tautology, by Aboriginal artist and 2013 Sobey Art Award winner Duane Linklater. The acquisition builds on the Gallery’s tradition of supporting practices by regional and Aboriginal artists. The MacLaren Art Centre will unveil Tautology on September 25, 2014 at the Gallery’s annual MacLaren Legacy Dinner, a featured event of Carnegie Days, which coincides with its Culture Days activities (September 26 to 28, 2014).
The Canada Council for the Arts is Canada’s national arts funder. Its grants and payments to artists and arts organizations benefit Canadians by ensuring a vibrant arts sector in Canada. Its awards celebrate creativity by recognizing exceptional Canadians in the arts, humanities and sciences. The Canada Council Art Bank is a national collection of over 17,000 Canadian contemporary artworks – all accessible to the public through rental, loan and outreach programs. The Canadian Commission for UNESCO operates within the Canada Council.
