The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today highlighted our Government’s action to combat human trafficking while speaking to participants of the [free-them] Freedom Walk. The Freedom Walk is an annual activity that raises awareness and funds to fight human trafficking in Canada and promotes collaboration and action among anti-human trafficking partners.
Our Government has taken strong action to combat human trafficking in all its forms. In June 2012, our Government launched the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking, which consolidated ongoing efforts to combat this crime and introduced aggressive new initiatives to prevent human trafficking, identify victims, protect the most vulnerable and prosecute perpetrators. The National Action Plan supports organizations that provide assistance to victims and builds on our current response of working together with our valued partners, including [free-them], to prevent and combat this disturbing crime.

- Key achievements under the National Action Plan include:
- launch of a special RCMP Enforcement Team to Combat Human Trafficking that works closely with law enforcement partners;.
- a National Threat Assessment on domestic human trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation in Canada;
- annual consultations with human trafficking stakeholders across Canada;
- a partnership with the National Association of Friendship Centres to develop an awareness campaign aimed at Aboriginal populations on human trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation;
- launch of a youth awareness campaign through the RCMP;
- increased outreach information targeting foreign nationals and temporary foreign workers, who may be vulnerable to human trafficking; and
- amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act Regulations to provide further protections to temporary foreign workers, including ensuring that employers make reasonable efforts to provide a workplace free of abuse.
