The Honourable Rob Nicholson, PC, QC, MP for Niagara Falls and Minister of National Defence, and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) invite the public to mark the 74th anniversary of the Battle of Britain on Sunday, September 21, 2014. The national ceremony will be held at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa, from 10:15 a.m. to noon. It will honour Canadians who fought with members of British and allied air forces at a critical moment in world history. Second World War veterans will parade alongside currently serving RCAF personnel and air cadets. Ceremonies will also be held at RCAF locations across the country.
Weather permitting; the event will feature a fly-past of vintage and current RCAF aircraft. The Central Band of the Canadian Forces, Royal Canadian Air Force (Ottawa) Pipes and Drums will also perform.
“The Battle of Britain was one of the most significant battles of the Second World War. We honour those Canadians who were part of the stand against a relentless enemy. These young Canadians joined our Air Forces to champion the same values of democracy and freedom that we cherish today. Their incredible feats should give every Canadian an enormous sense of pride.”
The Honourable Rob Nicholson, PC, QC, MP for Niagara Falls and Minister of National Defence
“Seventy-four years have passed since valiant young airmen took to the skies during the Battle of Britain to defend against Nazi aggression. Despite the passage of time, the human spirit remains the same and I am proud to see professionalism, dedication and valour continue to be exhibited everyday by members of the Canadian Armed Forces.”
Royal Galipeau, MP for Ottawa-Orléans
“Young Canadians joined the RCAF in their thousands seventy-four years ago to defend against the German threat. The aerial battle we celebrate today, better known as the Battle of Britain, was a turning point for Britain, Canada and the Royal Canadian Air Force. We remember the sacrifice and honour those who served.”
LGen Yvan Blondin, Commander of the RCAF
