Open Farm Day an Opportunity for Families to Experience Agriculture in Nova Scotia

Halifax, Nova Scotia, September 16, 2014 – Fifty-one farms will open their doors to the public for Open Farm Day 2014 in Nova Scotia on Sunday, September 21.

Families will be able to get close to farm animals, visit a vineyard and see new grape varieties, see honey bees in action, pick apples and other fruit and take wagon rides through fields. Visitors will also see parts of agriculture that don’t immediately come to mind when they think about agriculture, including alpacas and Christmas trees.

Open Farm Day in Nova Scotia is funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture.
In Nova Scotia there are over 3,900 farms employing approximately 4,700 people.
In 2013, the industry generated $595.4 million in farm cash receipts. Dairy is the top revenue-generating sector, followed by fur and chicken.
The federal-provincial Growing Forward 2 agreement in Nova Scotia, signed in May 2013, provides $37 million federal and provincial funding over five years to ensure producers and processors have the tools and resources they need to continue to innovate and capitalize on emerging market opportunities
