On the margins of the NATO Summit, Prime Minister Stephen Harper met with Jens Stoltenberg, the next North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary–General.
Prime Minister Harper began by personally congratulating Mr. Stoltenberg as he prepares to assume his new role as Secretary General. The current security challenges facing NATO, most notably the importance of deterring Russia’s aggressive behaviour and supporting Ukraine was discussed. The two leaders also shared views on NATO’s future adaptation to the evolving Euro–Atlantic security environment and agreed on the need for the Alliance to enhance its readiness and responsiveness.
Prime Minister Harper underscored Canada’s steadfast support for NATO and both he and Mr. Stoltenberg pledged to work closely together in the years ahead.
