Prime Minister Stephen Harper met this afternoon with President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine. The meeting took place on the margins of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Summit. The two leaders last met in Kiev on June 7, 2014, when Prime Minister Harper attended President Poroshenko’s inauguration. In today's meeting, the two leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, including the ongoing violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity by Russia.
Prime Minister Harper reiterated Canada’s steadfast support to Ukraine and the leaders exchanged on how Canada and the international community can best assist Ukraine through the current crisis and beyond. The Prime Minister informed President Poroshenko of the new initiatives announced today that will help Ukraine as well NATO allies counter the threat posed by Russia’s militarism in the region.
