LÉVIS (Quebec), September 10, 2014 — Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued the following statement on the decision of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice regarding a challenge to the repeal of the long gun registry.
"I am very pleased that the Court has ruled in favour of the will of Parliament and of Canadians.
We have always said that the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry did not stop a single crime or save a single life. The Court agreed, stating that 'much of the statistical and expert evidence indicates that the effects [of the long-gun registry] are potentially minimal or non-existent.'
Our Government is committed to safe and sensible firearms policies. That is why we announced our intention to table the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act later this fall."
