The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement for World Suicide Prevention Day:
“As we mark World Suicide Prevention Day, I want to take the opportunity to reinforce our commitment to the health and well-being of the men and women in the Canadian Armed Forces. Our men and women in uniform put themselves in harm’s way in their service to Canada, and we are grateful for their sacrifices. Members who are battling mental illness now have greater access to specialized care than ever before, but the loss of even one life to suicide is one too many.
“Seeking help is the first step to facing our challenges head on. I urge those in need to reach out to their families, peers, supervisors, padres and medical professionals. Talk to someone. You are not alone and turning to a peer, a supervisor or a health care professional demonstrates immense personal strength.
“We all have a role to play in combating suicide and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues. I would like to encourage all Canadians to take part of this effort to engage in open and frank dialogue on mental health issues, to support each other and break down stigma associated with mental illness.”
