October 29, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today met with Manuel A. González Sanz, Costa Rica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, to discuss a number of bilateral and international issues, such as the strong and evolving trade and investment relationship between the two countries, as well as important people-to-people ties and human rights and security issues in the region.
"Costa Rica and Canada enjoy a broad, growing and multi-faceted relationship," said Baird. "We are proud to be close allies in regional and multilateral forums, as well as in the fight to increase security in the region.
"Today’s meeting allowed us to exchange views on our important commercial partnership. Costa Rica is a Global Markets Action Plan priority and an important trade partner in Central America."
Costa Rica accounts for 31.7 percent of Canada’s two-way merchandise trade in the region. Bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Costa Rica reached $705.46 million in 2013: merchandise exports to Costa Rica totalled $114.6 million, while imports from that country totalled $590.84 million.
