October 17, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today concluded his bilateral visit to Ireland. In his meeting with Charles Flanagan, Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Baird discussed a range of bilateral and international issues and highlighted Canada and Ireland’s shared values, including freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
“Canada and Ireland share strong historical and economic ties,” said Baird. “We are celebrating the 75th anniversary of our bilateral relations this year. We look forward to the implementation of the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which we are confident will result in more jobs and opportunities for Canadians and the Irish alike.”
Global issues discussed include the Middle East Peace Process, the threat posed by the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Iraq and Syria, and Russia’s provocations in Ukraine.
Baird also met with representatives of the business community to encourage increased business cooperation between Canada and Ireland.
