Project made possible thanks to New Building Canada Plan
October 14, 2014 – Stellarton, Nova Scotia – Infrastructure Canada
Several activities took place today across Nova Scotia to announce the rehabilitation of sections of the National Highway System (NHS) in Nova Scotia. The Government of Canada has conditionally set aside up to $20 million under the New Building Canada Plan to support the Province's plan to restore various sections of the NHS.
The announcement was made in the following locations on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec:
- Stellarton with the Honourable Peter MacKay, Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and Member of Parliament for Central Nova, who was joined by Troy Webb, Area Manager, Pictou, on behalf of the Honourable Randy Delorey, Minister of Environment and MLA for Antigonish;
- Cookville with Gerald Keddy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue and for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Member of Parliament for South Shore—St. Margaret's, who was joined by Greg Newell, Area Manager Yarmouth/Shelburne, on behalf of Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, MLA for Lunenburg; and
- Bible Hill with Scott Armstrong, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Employment and Social Development and Member of Parliament for Cumberland—Colchester—Musquodoboit Valley, who was joined by Peter Hackett, Executive Director, Highway Engineering and Construction, on behalf of the Honourable Karen Casey, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development and MLA for Colchester North.
Meanwhile, Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, was joined by the Honourable Zach Churchill, Minister of Natural Resources and MLA for Yarmouth and by Gordon Wilson, MLA for Clare—Digby, in welcoming the announcement of federal support for this initiative.
Numerous sections of Nova Scotia's 100 series highway system will be improved. Work will include rehabilitating the asphalt riding surface, installing shoulder rumble strips, widening paved shoulders where necessary, and upgrading the guardrail systems. The work will span four years and take place in the counties of Digby, Halifax, Colchester, Pictou, Antigonish, Queens, Yarmouth, Cumberland, Richmond and Lunenburg.
The New Building Canada Plan is the largest and longest federal infrastructure plan in Canada's history. This unprecedented commitment will provide $53 billion over the next decade to support provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure.
Over the next 10 years, Nova Scotia will benefit from approximately $1 billion in dedicated federal funding, including more than $426 million under the New Building Canada Fund.
