October 14, 2014 – Kirkland Lake, Ontario – Infrastructure Canada
Representatives from the federal and municipal governments gathered today to celebrate the completion of the Kirkland Lake Wastewater Improvement Project. The upgraded wastewater infrastructure will better protect the environment and ensure the health and safety of local residents.
Thanks to funding from the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario and the Town of Kirkland Lake, a new wastewater treatment plant was built adjacent to the existing plant. The project also included decommissioning the old plant and converting it to a pumping station with a storm-surge tank to provide additional storm water capacity during peak flows.
Not only will these improvements ensure sufficient treatment capacity to support population growth over the next 20 years or more, the energy efficient plant will provide a higher level of treatment, enabling Kirkland Lake to meet federal and provincial wastewater system effluent regulations.
"Important projects like this one significantly improve the quality of life for local residents. The upgraded Kirkland Lake Wastewater Treatment System will support and sustain this community while protecting the environment and preserving the local waterways for years to come. Our government is proud to invest in significant infrastructure projects that create jobs, promote growth, and build strong, prosperous communities across Ontario."
- Jay Aspin, Member of Parliament for Nipissing—Timiskaming
"This is a moment that all of KL should be proud of. By partnering with the Feds and the Province, we have, at no cost to local taxpayers, provided a safe, efficient and long lasting state of the art solution to sewage management for years to come. Congratulations to all involved."
