Ottawa, October 13, 2014 – Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister, Chris Alexander, issued the following statement to recognize Citizenship Week:
“Today marks the beginning of Citizenship Week, an annual opportunity for Canadians to proudly celebrate our citizenship and reflect on what it means to be a Canadian.
“This week we are all encouraged to reflect on the many rights and freedoms we enjoy as citizens of this strong, prosperous and diverse country. It underscores our responsibilities as Canadians to our fellow citizens, our communities, and our country.
“Our story is truly remarkable. The freedoms we enjoy are because of those who made great sacrifices to defend our country’s values. As Canadians, we share fundamental beliefs in freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
“As Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister, I encourage all Canadians to participate in the many citizenship ceremonies and events taking place across the country during Citizenship Week.
“This week, let’s be #CanadaProud.”
