Minister Moore Celebrates Canada's Strong Manufacturing Sector at Start of National Manufacturing Month

Will conduct a cross-Canada tour to engage business leaders on the future of the manufacturing industry

To mark the start of National Manufacturing Month, Industry Minister James Moore today celebrated the strength of Canada's manufacturing industry and announced the start of a cross-Canada tour to meet with industry leaders and workers throughout the fall to hear their views on the industry's future.

The Government will hold consultations across Canada to learn more about the industry's opportunities for growth and make sure that the right economic conditions are created to ensure success in the years ahead. These meetings will give Canadian manufacturers a chance to discuss issues that influence their competitiveness at home and abroad.

This cross-Canada tour coincides with National Manufacturing Month, an effort hosted by Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters. The advocacy organization seeks to raise Canadians' awareness about the economic and social impact of manufacturers.

Quick facts

Manufacturing has become a high-tech, high-skill economic engine in Canada.
Manufacturing employs close to 1.7 million Canadians, and almost all of these jobs are full-time. Manufacturing sales have bounced back and are up more than 25 percent since the recession.
In support of the manufacturing sector, the Harper government has negotiated trade agreements that will expand market opportunities and create jobs. It has eliminated tariffs on machinery and equipment, making Canada the first tariff-free zone for manufacturing inputs in the G20, and it has renewed the accelerated capital cost allowance in 2013, providing $1.4 billion in deferred taxes to Canadian manufacturers that invest in machinery and equipment.
The government is investing in innovation in manufacturing through initiatives such as the Advanced Manufacturing Fund and the Technology Demonstration Program.
The government has also focused on establishing the right conditions for success, lowering taxes, cutting the corporate tax rate from over 22 percent in 2007 to 15 percent today, and removing the federal capital tax.
