Project completed thanks to funding from federal, provincial and local governments

Sechelt's innovative state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility is now operational.
Designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold accreditation, the Sechelt Water Resource Centre will provide residents with energy-efficient wastewater treatment for years to come. As one of its innovative elements, a greenhouse will use organic processes to help filter waste products. Improved treatment methods also mean that odours and noise that were previously produced during the treatment process will be eliminated.
Funding for this $24.9 million project was provided from a variety of sources. The Government of Canada's total contribution is over $18 million, comprised of $8 million from the federal Gas Tax Fund, $1.6 million from the Communities Component of the 2007 Building Canada Fund, and a non-repayable grant and low interest loan totalling $8.4 million from the Green Municipal Fund. The Province of British Columbia provided $1.6 million. The Sechelt Indian Government District paid $1.68 million to purchase treatment capacity for its residents and businesses. The balance of the project cost of $3.7 million was contributed by the District of Sechelt using reserves set aside for this purpose.
"Our Government is pleased to have provided funding to the construction of the new Sechelt Water Resource Centre. This project has spanned two local governments, and I have had the pleasure of working alongside both. It is great to see this project of this size and importance comes to fruition.
Modern and effective waste water treatment is essential to ensuring the health and well-being of our communities, as well as protecting our coastal and aquatic ecosystems. Through our $53-billion New Building Canada Plan, we continue to support infrastructure projects of national, regional and local significance."
- John Weston, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea to Sky Country
"This new water resource centre is a great example of government partnerships in action. Through collaborative investments by the Government of British Columbia, Government of Canada and District of Sechelt, we are putting in place award-winning, green infrastructure that addresses the essential needs of the community, while protecting the long-term health and sustainability of the region for British Columbians and their families."
