October 2014
October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of sudden infant death and to promote safe sleep for babies.
The sudden death of an infant is one of the most devastating events that can happen to parents and their families. Sadly, each and every year, approximately 100 babies will be lost to SIDS in Canada.
The exact causes of SIDS are unknown. However, research shows that infants are safest when placed to sleep on their backs in a crib, cradle or bassinet with only a fitted sheet, in the same room as a parent or caregiver. Not smoking during pregnancy also reduces the risk of SIDS, and breastfeeding can have a protective effect against SIDS.
The Government of Canada works to address safe sleep for babies by administering and enforcing safety regulations for cribs, cradles and bassinets. In addition, the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Safe Sleep for Your Baby resources provide parents and caregivers with up to date and accessible information on safe sleep for babies.
This month, I encourage all health practitioners, expectant and new parents, their families and friends, and all caregivers to learn more about safe sleep practices to reduce the risk of SIDS.
The Honourable Rona Ambrose
Minister of Health
