October 3, 2014 – Timmins, Ontario – Infrastructure Canada
Set for completion in 2016, construction is well underway on a major overhaul of the Mattagami River Wastewater Treatment Plant. Built in 1964, the facility serves over 40,000 residents in Timmins and sits on the banks of the Mattagami River.
The project will increase the plant's treatment capacity by converting it from primary to secondary level of treatment, which will improve the quality of wastewater that is discharged into the Mattagami River.
Once the project is completed, the updated plant will use modern technological systems to improve the collection of wastewater, the treatment of sludge and the management of biosolids. These enhancements will reduce the negative impacts of wastewater effluent on human health and the surrounding environment, and enable the City of Timmins to meet the Government of Canada's Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations.
"Our government understands that effective treatment of wastewater is essential to ensuring the health and well-being of our communities and safeguarding our waterways. Ongoing upgrades to the Mattagami River Waste Water Treatment Plant will not only improve the water of the Mattagami River, they will also benefit the local economy, enable population growth, provide healthier surroundings, and help protect the environment."
