Local Clean-Tech Company Expands Into New Markets
November 5, 2014 – Halifax, NS – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
CarbonCure Technologies Inc. is offering a cost effective solution for the concrete and cement industry to produce greener and more sustainable products. This Halifax-based company has recently launched the second generation of its technology, which is gaining traction within the industry throughout North America.
The patented CarbonCure system takes waste carbon dioxide and traps the greenhouse gases into masonry products. The system is compatible with the equipment in most concrete manufacturing plants and takes less than one day to install. The technology enables production of ‘green’ blocks that can be up to 20 percent stronger than regular concrete.
With fourteen manufacturing partners across Canada and the United States, CarbonCure is focused on expanding the market for their technology to new builders, engineers and architects. The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is helping to support this market development with a $500,000 repayable contribution to the company through its Business Development Program (BDP).
In addition to providing manufacturers with green technology, CarbonCure also provides producers with supporting tools and services to accelerate market adoption. ACOA’s contribution will assist CarbonCure with marketing to new manufacturers and developing technologies to remotely monitor their systems and troubleshoot problems from Nova Scotia. As well, this support will help CarbonCure to expand the applications in their patent and intellectual property portfolio.
Quick Facts:
• CarbonCure’s green building material innovation reduces production costs for precast concrete producers while reducing greenhouse gasses during the concrete and cement manufacturing process.
• CarbonCure has been recognized as one of the global top 10 green building products for 2013 by BuidlingGreen.com
• The cement and concrete industry contributes approximately 5% of global carbon dioxide emissions annually
• The mass of concrete used worldwide is twice that of steel, wood, plastics, and aluminum combined; the only material used more than concrete is water.
• CarbonCure’s technology is the only commercially available carbon sequestration solution for the concrete industry available in North America today
• By the end of 2014, CarbonCure Technologies expects to have completed more than 20 installations in Canada and the United States.
• When used in an average school construction project, CarbonCure’s CO2 sequestration technology will capture and store 1 tonne of CO2, which is equivalent to the amount of carbon sequestered by 1 acre of forest in a year
