Branch 62 of the Royal Canadian Legion received $2,125 for the Spirit of Remembrance 1914–2014 events in St. Mary’s. On November 5, Branch 62 collaborated with the 4H Zodiac Youth on an outdoor candlelight ceremony at the Riverhead Cenotaph. Candles were placed on the war memorial in memory of the First World War, particularly casualties from the 1st Newfoundland Regiment. On Remembrance Day, the Branch will host a parade and wreath-laying ceremony followed by a reception, which will feature a commemorative slide show and a personal story told by the mother of a soldier killed in Afghanistan. Her son’s uniform will be featured as part of a modern-day Veteran exhibit, which will also be on display.
The Town of Howley received $1,600 for a Remembrance Day ceremony on November 9. This traditional ceremony included a parade, speeches and the laying of wreaths at the Main Street war memorial. A reception followed at the community hall, allowing the public and youth to interact with Veterans, peacekeepers and Canadian Armed Forces personnel.
The St. Lawrence Historical Advisory Committee will receive $2,500 for the project, Week to Remember, which is taking place from November 5-11 in St. Lawrence. In keeping with the Municipal Council’s declaration of 2014 as the year of its local Veterans, this project recognizes local residents who have served, including modern-day Veterans of the Afghanistan mission. The events include a Remembrance Day ceremony, a candlelight ecumenical service, and a meal for local youth featuring rationed recipes to highlight wartime hardships. A DVD featuring area Veterans and footage shot during the week’s activities will be produced and distributed to local Veterans.
